  • Needle felting mat
  • Felting needle

Begin by grabbing a small egg sized piece of roving in a shade of pink or orange, roll it into a log, and place it on your needle felting mat.

Next, use the felting needle to poke the roving. As you do this over and over, the roving will start to felt. This means it comes together and forms little knots and makes a tigheter bond between the fibers.

Continue to poke the needle into the roving working your way around to form a carrot shape. More poking at the tip to form the tighter felted point of the carrot and less at the top to form the wide top portion.

When the carrot is formed and holds it’s shape, use the needle to poke in a small piece of green roving for the carrot top. Now repeat with all your roving colors to make at least 5 carrots for your mini cake bunting. For a larger garland you may want to make 12-15 carrots.

Use a large embroidery needle to thread the baker’s twine through the top of the carrots. Next, cut a 1/4″ slit in the top of two paper straws and slide the ends of the twine through the slit. Use tape to secure the twine if desired.

The final step for your cake bunting is to insert the straws into the cake. For a long garland to hang on the wall, simple tie a loop in the ends of the baker’s twine and use them to hang the bunting.
